ISTE Standards

1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity

Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.

a. Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness

b. Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources

c. Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes

d. Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments

My Progress towards this goal:

Evidence 1: Inquiry Project

I created a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) project that is also called an Inquiry Project. The main idea of a PBL is to give students a real world problem and have them control how they solve it. Each student can think of a different way to answer the question. For this example we focused on the issue of Bees dying off. We would start with lessons to explain the importance of bees and why they are dying off. Then I pose them with a driving question of 'How can we help the dying bees?' Students get to participate in creative and innovative thinking to solve the problem at hand. They get to use digital tools as well as real-world skills to solve the problem.

Evidence 2: Symbaloo

The Symbaloo page that I have created uses a variety of technological tools and resources that the students will benefit from in any learning environment. This promotes and models creative and innovative thinking because the students will be provided with a variety of resources and they will be able to choose which resource is the best for their current lesson or unit in school. The students will have opportunities to use collaborative tools and use certain tools that will help clarify concepts and ideas presented in class. This resources is very engaging to the students and can be utilized by students of all ages. I have designed my page for elementary aged students as well as tools I use myself for the classroom. My Symbaloo page has kid friendly games and online activities that will enhance the students learning and engage them throughout the activities. These resources can be used as a supplemental activity to a lesson, or a refresher on an old topic.

Evidence 3: Instructional Video

My instructional video explains place value and how two-digit numbers represent groups of tens and ones. It models learning in a virtual environment as I am teaching my students place through a video. I recorded myself teaching a lesson by showing pictures and recording myself talking in the background so there was visuals to help them understand the material. This type of learning is something that they would be exposed to in a flipped classroom or possibly an online educational program. The students are able to rewatch the video as many times as necessary to clarify their understanding on the topic.

2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments

Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the Standards.

a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity

b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress

c. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources

d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching

My Progress towards this goal:

Evidence 1: Service Learning Project

For the Service Learning Project we were tasked with finding and helping a teacher adjust a lesson to make it more interesting and engaging and to incorporate technology. Since we got to incorporate contemporary tools, technology, it helped create a more engaging lesson. My teacher tasked me with the unit of animal babies. She said she hasn't used much technology with this lesson in the past. I was able to create videos and an interactive white board activity for the teacher to use in her lesson. When I was younger there was no such thing as an interactive white board so it is definitely an interactive tool. We all adapted learning experiences to incorporate digital tools. I also tried to promote creativity by creating an assignment at the end where the students got to pick their own animal and compare it to its baby. The students would get to do a safe search and find pictures of their animals. The creative aspect I think will make it more fun for the students.

Evidence 2: Plickers

I created a formative assessment using a digital tool known as Plickers. This tool allowed me to create a series of multiple choice questions where I could use an iPad to grade the answers instantly and see who got the correct answer and who may need more help. This tool allowed for creativity amongst the students because although I only created a series of multiple choice questions, you have the ability to create other type of assessments. You can ask your students an open ended question, giving them choice and creativity in the answers they submit. Since the grading was anonymous, or by randomly assigned numbers, students didn't feel uncomfortable sharing their answers. This activity also gives me as the teacher a lot of freedom to form any type of assessment or additional instruction I need based off of the results. In my example, I gave a formative assessment, however, this resource also allows you to also create more formal assessments, or summative assessments that test the students learning and understanding of the topic.

Evidence 3: Screencast of ICT Games

This item was a video demonstrating and evaluating a program on the Internet that I liked a lot for my students. During the video I explained how you could select different levels based on your comfort with the topic. This would allow students to customize and personalize the learning activity, while still all learning the necessary standards. I like that I can create a screencast because then I am able to let the students be more independent and manage their own learning. In a screencast I can show them step by step what to do to get to a site and how to adjust the difficulty. The students can watch it independently as many times as they need in order to get to the right place and work. This is utilizes the amazing tool of technology because I created a video rather than teaching them in front of the classroom step by step.

3. Model digital age work and learning

Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society.

a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations

b. Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation

c. Communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital age media and formats

d. Model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning

My Progress towards this goal:

Evidence 1: S'more Newsletter

The newsletter I created was for my students and their parents. This was created using S'more to explain a little about me and give some insight into how I plan to conduct my classroom. I was able to provide information about the upcoming open house and first day of school. This would allow me in the future to easily communicate with parents about upcoming events and announcements. A newsletter is a great way to quickly share information with others and get notices and announcements out fast. This newsletter also provides parents with a brief summary of what their students will be working on in class. In addition, I was also able to upload the newsletter to my website so parents can easily access it there as well.

Evidence 2: Teacher Website

My teacher website allows me to exhibit knowledge, skills and work processes that are representative of my innovations in the professional field of education. My teacher website provides a lot of different examples of lesson plans, assessments, students work and many other useful resources to support student success. This website uses many different technology tools and puts them all together on one easy to navigate website. This website communicates relevant information and ideas effectively to the students and parents as well as peers using a a variety of digital-age media. My website communicates information to parents, students and peers through the calendar page as well as the newsletter page and the About Me page. Those pages communicate who I am as a person, who I aim to be as a teacher and what goals and lessons I plan to do in my classroom as well as how I plan on integrating technology into my classroom, especially at such a young age. This is a great tool to use in the classroom and demonstrates my knowledge of different technologies. Students and parents will be able to navigate the website easily and get information from me that they need.

Evidence 3: Google Calendar

My Google Calendar was a way for me to organize and put down everything that is going on in the classroom. Parents can find this easily on my website and be informed quickly and easily about what their student is up to in class. Google Calendar also allows you to add different calendars to your personal calendar on your phone so that you cna get notifications about events coming up. This is an easy way that I am able to communicate information about events in the classroom with both parents and students.

4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility

Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.

a. Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources

b. Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources

c. Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information

d. Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools

My Progress towards this goal:

Evidence 1: Creative Commons License

My teacher website and E-Portfolio both contain a Creative Commons License. This license allows me to claim rights over the work that I have created and decide how I would like people to be able to use my work. This makes it so that I can share my work with others while still being able to claim it as my own and have my own rights over it. This is an online resource that allows for me to create this license and post it to my work so that I can promote and model the correct use of digital information while also respecting intellectual property. Through this tool I am able to share my work to benefit others, while also demonstrating the correct way to promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility. I am able to take responsibility for the work I have created and posted in a safe and ethical way. In my sites I am careful to use mostly my personal resources, and citing others by giving credit appropriately. This is setting a good example and providing a great resource for my students and other colleagues who view my work and use my resources.

Evidence 2: Internet Safety Lesson

The internet safety lesson I created deals with students being safe while they are online. I talk about what is okay to share with others and ways to stay safe while they are online. This is promoting digital etiquette and responsible social interaction using technology. I want the students to understand how certain things should not be posted online because anyone could see them and this could be dangerous. I created this lesson using PowToons which allows me to create a slideshow or video with moving characters that can talk to you. Also I am able to add in my voice so that the students could learn this anywhere. I have the students take an Internet Safety Pledge with me during the video so that the students feel responsible for anything that may happen on the Internet that they are involved in and know what to do about it.

Evidence 3: Technology Rule Infographic

I have created an infographic on rules with technology in the classroom. I created this infographic on my specific classroom rules on how to properly use the iPads. This infographic will allow for the students to know exactly what is expected of them and will allow for me to advocate and teach safe and ethical uses of technology. My infographic was created on a tool called Piktochart, which allows you to add in pictures and fonts and create any work you would like starting from any template. This will help teachers address the needs of all learners and can allow for teachers to cater to the needs of all their students. This poster is very effective in modeling digital etiquette as all the rules are clearly stated and the students are addressed in a formal but considerate manner. The rules also clearly place responsibility on the students for any damage or broken rules, therefore the students know their expectations and are aware that there will be consequences for their actions over the misuse of technology.

5. Engage in professional growth and leadership

Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources.

a. Participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning

b. Exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others

c. Evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning

d. Contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community

My Progress towards this goal:

Evidence 1: Twitter

Twitter is a growing site that is actually extremely useful in professional growth. Twitter is a social site that is able to connect me with teachers from across the world and get their insight on different topics. Hashtags are used on the site to link posts about different topics. I am able to search the hashtags and look back at conversations, or use the hashtag and engage in the conversation. This tool allows me to get ideas and resources from other teachers, but also share my resources and experiences to help other teachers. Teachers on Twitter are constantly exploring new ways to use technology in the classroom and sharing the best sources for different topics. It is a great community to be a part of.

Evidence 2: Teacher Website

The Teacher Website I created outlines the future classroom I would like to have. It also showcases different techological tools that I have learned how to use and how I plan to utilize them in my future classroom. I think that teacher websites are a great way to share resources not only with my students, but with anyone online. My website is public so anyone can find it if they look hard enough. Other teachers can look at the layout of my site and the resources I have on there to get ideas and inspiration for their own websites. On my resources I have reflected on the tools that I used to give others an idea of what the resource is and how it could be used in the classroom and how to effectively use it to support student learning.

Evidence 3: Service Learning

The goal of my Service Learning Project was to work with another teacher to create a unique lesson to integrate technology into the classroom to help the students better understand the curriculum. I happened to work with my cousin who is a kindergarten teacher and design a lesson for the unit "Animal Babies". In order to create a project that was the most beneficial for her and the students, I had to remain in contact with her throughout the project. We kept in touch over what artifacts and technology tools would be best for the project and what level of understanding of the topics addressed in the unit the students already had. I created deliverables for this project. One was an introduction video that allowed me to introduce the topic and get the students thinking about similarities and differences between adult and  baby animals. I also created a Flipchart that outlines the entire unit, from the introduction video to an ending project. I had never created a Flipchart before so I was able to learn about and use a new form of technology. This project allowed me to demonstrate an effective way to use technology to support student learning.
